Obesity Is A Growing Epidemic In Children And Teens
There has been a steady increase in childhood obesity in the United States and it continues to baffle and confound professionals of every stripe. It doesn’t help that almost all solid food sold in the US contains a bunch of high fructose corn syrup. This, however, is another issue that we are not going to discuss in this article. Obese children sometimes seem like they’ve never had an honest chance at life and this feels like a sad testimony about our culture. In addition to the bullying they have to endure from their peers, the kids also suffer from a variety of physical problems ranging from back pain and arthritis to Type II diabetes. There is much more to this sad state of affairs, and we will mention just a few in this article.
The whole human body is stressed in physical areas if you are overweight. Obstructive sleep apnea is a potentially dangerous problem that a child can have from being obese. Problems can also occur in normal breathing as well if a child is obese.
The obese young adult or child may develop asthma due to their weight condition. Other problems that face the normal breathing process are often called exercise intolerance. People that are overweight seem to always have labored breathing and you may have noticed this. This is caused by the body having to work harder and breathe harder. This merely sets the stage for increased stress on the entire cardiovascular system, as well.
One of the oldest expressions around is that kids and children can be cruel to each other. Most of us experienced this first hand in our childhoods. Kids who suffer from obesity are a lot more likely to have to deal with lots of teasing and, often, being humiliated verbally. The fact that most of the kids survive all of those years of school without losing their minds is a miracle. We all understand that that kind of long lasting abuse can have severe consequences later on. The constant assault can have a detrimental effect on a child’s confidence, self esteem and any number of other issues–the list is a long one.
Researchers are still trying to figure out if there is a direct connection between early onset puberty (especially in girls though boys can deal with it too) and obesity in kids. However, there’s a particular amount of common sense to be had in looking at what we know. For example, it is known that obese and overweight children grow at a faster rate, and they do enter puberty earlier. But it is a time in which clear decisions need to be made as to what causes what. Obviously early onset puberty is not as terrible a threat as other conditions that are related to childhood obesity but there can be implications that accompany the abnormally young age for puberty to set in for these kids.
These children need to lose this weight so we think that it is a good idea for them to have an emergency plan of action. But we do know that these children are in many unique situations. This situation is very serious and it has so far avoided being reversed.
