Sales Of Kindle Books Are Now Higher Than Sales of Paperbacks
It’s not that long since Amazon announced that they were selling more Kindle books than hardback editions.Now they have advised that their Kindle books are outselling paperbacks. It surely can’t be long before Kindle book sales are higher than both paperback and hardback sales combined.
It has a certain air of inevitability when you think about it.Anyone who is prepared to pay over $ 100 for an e-book reader is probably going to be the type of person who reads a good number of books, surely? Of course, there will always be some book lovers who prefer the feel of a “real” book – but, over the piece, we do appear to be heading towards a scenario where e-books assume ever greater importance in the publishing world.
There is certainly a good selection of Kindle books available for buyers to choose from.At the moment there are over 800,000 Kindle books to choose from on the Amazon website. This number is growing by the day – and there are an additional 1.8 million out of copyright books which can be downloaded for free. These include some classic works by such authors as Shakespeare, Charles Dickens, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, Homer, Virgil among others.
Amazon has also released a variety of free apps to allow Kindle books to be read without the use of a Kindle reader. These are available for the Apple iPhone, the iPad, the PC, the Mac, any device which runs Android and the Blackberry smart phone. An app for the new HP tablet computer is said to be in the pipeline. This means that users have no need to worry about their Kindle becoming obsolete. Each app also functions as an extra sales outlet for Amazon.
Currently, Amazon are thought to have approximately 90% of the e-book market. Clearly that cannot continue in the long term, industry watchers are predicting a roughly equal three way split between Amazon, Apple and Google by 2015. However, many of those same analysts predicted that the launch of Apple’s iPad would be the death of the Kindle, and they got that wrong didn’t they?
In fact, the new third generation Kindle reader is selling better than ever before. It was Amazon’s best selling product (again) during the 2010 festive sales season, and the Kindle has now been Amazon’s best selling item for eighteen months. 2011 sales forecasts have been increased from 5 million Kindles to 8 million, based upon recent sales returns. Some rationalisation of the market seems probable in the future, but there’s no evidence that the dominance of the Kindle is going to reduce in the short to medium term.
