Parental Readiness

Unexpected circumstances present parents with challenges in caring for their children. No matter whether you’ve been stranded or if your electric service has been interrupted, planning ahead helps you deal with the unexpected.

PREPARED, NOT PANICKED
The temptation to panic is dangerous when in an emergency (reference: RULE OF 3'S TO SURVIVE). Young ones will mirror your feelings. Children will be calmed by a confident, prepared adult.

THE NEED FOR A ROUTINE
Find opportunities to institute some semblance of a routine in your children’s day. This will give them a sense of stability and show that you are still able to function as parent and protector.

PASTIMES
Entertainment is a must when you are stranded for a time. Batteries and generators won’t likely be available for games. Craft supplies are wonderful to have on hand; this includes play dough, scissors, paper, tape, markers, glue and other assorted items. Take the time to introduce your children to board games, dolls, toy cars, blocks, puzzles and reading in order that they will be welcomed ‘old friends’ should they need entertainment. Have educational materials (workbooks, etc.) on hand in case organized schooling is not an option.

HEALTHY ON PURPOSE
Your dental health and other health conditions should be tended while you have access to remedies and treatments. Rather than neglect those annoying aches and pains, take steps to remedy them so they aren’t a factor in an emergency. Remember to keep any necessary medicines in stock. Make note of the eliminations, sleep patterns and appetite of each family member so that you will detect quickly if any are becoming ill and treat them at the first sign of sickness. Train yourself to take note of the impact of circumstances on those around you. It is easy to become consumed with your own difficulties and overlook warning signals that others may need help.

AVOID FAKE FOODS
Tomorrow’s health is affected by today’s food choices. Picky eaters can become ill if they refuse nutritious foods. It is possible to introduce children to a variety of real foods and cultivate an appreciation for them, but it can be difficult if these vital foods must compete with processed and extruded processed calories and sugars. Take time to introduce new foods gradually in the diet. Basic real food preparation and nutrition should become hot topics for learning and teaching in your home.

BABIES AND INFANTS
Proper care of a baby doesn’t require a lot of equipment. Just as yesterday’s mothers didn’t require music players, pacifiers, disposable diapers, bouncy seats, carriers, cribs and other accoutrements for infant care, neither are they necessities today. What babies DO require is nourishment, and to be kept warm and dry.

Breastfeeding is a learned skill. Learning to breastfeed is a wise investment in the health of both the baby and the mother. This decision can insure that your infant will continue to receive nourishment even if other supplies are scarce. Keep a good supply of formula stocked and on hand for bottle-fed babies.

Infants need help regulating body temperature and should be protected from extremes of heat and cold. Keep babies in the shade during the summer. An umbrella is a good tool for this. In the winter, dressing little ones in layers protects them from the cold. Long-sleeved thermal underwear can be worn beneath zippered fleece sleepers for nighttime warmth. Sharing a bed with several persons will also help keep everyone warm at night. Wool socks, hats and zippered fleece jackets can keep babies warm during the day.

HYGIENE
During cold temperatures or when water is scarce, there is no need to expect that baths will be a daily occurrence. Locate the warmest area of your living space and teach each child how to quickly wash face, hands, feet and privates each day. Become diligent about washing hands before meal preparation and before eating. This is important for healthy hygiene in rustic conditions. Latrine construction, maintenance, and waste disposal are important lessons for older children.

USEFUL ABILITIES
Learning life skills gives children more confidence in uncertain circumstances. Give your children the gift of learning how to do such things as shop wisely, stock a pantry, pitch a tent, build a camp fire, cook, sew, garden, repair small engines, perform first aid, CPR, and swim. Knowing self defense, what to do in a fire drill and practicing other scenarios builds confidence. A prepared child is also less likely to panic.

Emergencies will be handled better by children that have been trained in an atmosphere of preparedness. You will have helped insulate them from emotional trauma by preparing them. These measures help families face uncertainty with strength.
