How to prepare for a baby should really begin at least six months before conception. Seriously. This is time to lose weight and get fit to make sure your body can provide the healthiest environment possible for your growing offspring. Visit your doctor for a check up to find out if have any medical issues that need to be resolved prior to conception. Take this opportunity to wean yourself off any drugs that you should not take during pregnancy.
The months before conception are also a good time to spring clean your finances. Pay off those lingering credit card bills. Set up a savings plan.
Wow, that happened fast! It's one year later and you turned the stick a positive shade of blue. Now you have a deadline and something tangible to prepare for. No matter how well you have planned or how hard you have tried to conceive, there will be an alarm bell that goes off in the back of your mind. What have you let yourself in for?
You will feel relieved, thrilled, ecstatic, and terrified. Part of you may even grieve for the nomadic, free-spirited life you will soon be forsaking. This is to be expected. It does not mean that you are not going to be a terrific parent.
Getting ready for a new arrival involves medical appointments and parenting classes. This is your chance to ask all the questions you can think of about how to feed the new creature, when to call the doctor, how to keep your baby safe, etc. You may decide on a birth plan for that inevitable moment. Be prepared to scupper it if things in the labor room don't go according to the book.
Now, the pains are three minutes apart. You are on your way to the hospital. The only thing you may not be ready for is the powerful wave of love that is going to consume you the first time you gaze into your baby's eyes.
